The Boogie Boarding Days of Summer!

07.06.10

Happy Summer to everyone!  I don’t know about you but I always look forward to summer; a break in the routine; camps for the kids; fun in the water (because let’s face it if you are outside in the summer in Florida – it is HOT and you need to be in some body of water.)  But the summer brings some craziness to it; expensive camps, juggling work and kids (more than usual) and a slow down of business. With all of that I still look forward to summer because it reminds me of my summers as a kid and how excited I was to be out of school and “wooo-hooo” the fun it would bring.

I had a ton of fun this past weekend. I took the kids to a beach house for the 4th of July weekend and we had  an amazing time.  We boogie boarded for 3 days straight and let me tell you I learned a lot from my kids, they really know how to live in the moment. They didn’t have a care in the world they were riding the waves, playing in the sand, laughing and enjoying every second of it.  When we were on the beach there were no worries of bill paying, relationship struggles or anything that was negative.  There was no watching the clock, we got up when we wanted to, we ate when we were hungry, we went to bed when we were tired, we went to family fun day, we climbed 203 steps to the top of the lighthouse, we watched fireworks and overall it was impossible to feel anything but JOY!

The best part of it all was playing in the ocean with the kids.  They were boogie boarding king and queen and I was right there with them.  I even lost my bathing suit bottoms at one point. It was impossible be feel anything but positive emotion (even with sand in your pants) as we were caught up in the moment of the sand, surf, waves, giggles and overall FUN!

I realized in that moment that we could all take a page from their books because that is how life is meant to be lived.  In the moment, enjoying whatever the day unfolds for you.  When we get caught up in the “Why is this happening to me,”  “What is my next step,” “What did I do to deserve this,” etc., etc we lose the moment and focus on all the negative things in life instead of focusing on the feeling of fun and joy.

I know it isn’t possible for everyone to get to the beach and this was extreme FUN and I know there are real worries (I’ve got some of them myself) but what if we stop worrying for just a moment.  The problems may not go away but we would certainly be happier in the process of it all.

It is all perspective, you can choose to be unhappy and negative or you can simply choose to feel better about everything no matter what your circumstances.  Life is meant to be ridden on a boogie board.  So, for this summer I choose to take a lesson from my kids – live in the moment and know that everything will always work out.  It always does!  Make it a Boogie Boarding Summer!
